The Mapping UBD for First Grade

In January, Michelle Withers and I will be coteaching a mapping UBD unit for social studies. We developed the idea last year based on the lack of social studies in the first grade curriculum. After much debate and research in the standards, we decided to create a comprehensive unit that teaches students to navigate around their school community as well as reading map symbols and cardinal directions. We are enjoying the planning/creative process and we can't wait to immerse the students in this enrichment unit.
We developed a three week unit that begins with basic map skills such as map symbols and directions/vocabulary and culminates with a student creates school atlas.
We look forward to celebrating our mapping unit with our students and welcome any comments or suggestions.

Your mapping unit sounds wonderful. Have you ever thought of having it be videotaped?

Sounds like a great UBD Christa...I think that the UBD people would be VERY interested in videotaping it....
